Peace be Still by James Seward

Jesus Calms the Sea

Jesus Calms the Sea! In the below described miracle something took place that is quite important to think about. It probably happened all the time, but there is no evidence of it in scripture; Jesus performed a miracle by talking to things that people commonly consider to be “dead”, namely the wind and the sea:

37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.

38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

40 And he said unto them: Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?

41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another: What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? (Mark 4:37-41)

What manner of man is this? This was the question of the apostles. Every living and thinking being have reason to ask this question, over and over, until the day when he/she are finally converted to the truth; that he was indeed the Christ, the very Son of God. He performed numerous miracles, but the one at hand is perhaps more interesting than the others. I wonder why the apostles didn’t ask:

How can wind and water hear and obey the voice of Jesus? They were so taken aback at the fact that Jesus calms the sea that they could only focus on the man who performed the miracle. They totally forgot to ask themselves how it was possible that Jesus calms the sea by talking to it; the water and the wind being dead! How could it hear Jesus - and follow his command? The obvious answer, of course, has to be; the wind and water are not lifeless at all. In fact - all matter must have life!

All matter has life! What a strange idea! But in a minute you will willingly agree with me, and it will be clear to you that this was the reality in which Jesus performed his miracles.

When the earth was created, the same person, Jesus, (under his eternal name Jehovah), spoke to the elements, and they obeyed. This must be strong evidence to the believer that everything is alive, even objects. If matter had no life in them, it would make no difference how much Jehovah would have commanded the dead elements, they could have done nothing but to remain in their place! The earth would still have been “without form and void” today! And with no planet organized, there would be no soil in which to plant seeds, no surface for animals to roam, no firmament for the Garden of Eden, and man would still be un-created. When the apostles to be woke Jesus up, in fear for their life, if there was no intelligence in the particles of the air and water – Jesus could have shouted until they all drowned, for dead matter cannot be commanded, let alone follow the command!

Understanding that everything has life gives strength our belief in the Father and the Son; For with that knowledge we can grasp how come matter follows the voice of the creator. With this understanding it is easy for me to believe that all the natural laws are sustained as a result of every particle or substance obeying the voice of the Creator. There is a beautiful scientific explanation to the natural laws, but had Jehovah given other instructions to every particle in the universe, the scientific community would soon find laws that govern those circumstances. Surely those scientific laws are the scientific receipts explaining the commands of the omnipotent creator! What we need to ponder now is how come the elements obeys without fail, while man so often disobeys the voice of God. Why, then, will man inherit the greater rewards?
