The Miracles of Jesus

Christ Healing the Sick at Bethesda by Carl Bloch

Verified His Divinity

The miracles of Jesus were a blessing to hiss fellow man. The needs for such miracles in the lives of the blind, lame and otherwise afflicted have always been the same. The miracles of Jesus were by no means the first ones performed, but never before had a prophet performed miracles on such a scale! Why didn't prophets before or after Jesus perform the number of miracles, and the wonderful miracles that Jesus did? What purpose did the miracles fill?

As Jehovah, Jesus had commanded his people not to take the name of the Lord in vain (i.e. His name). This was a commandment that the Jews took very seriously. If someone came and said that he was Jehovah, or the Messiah, or the Son of God, that person would be stoned to death, unless there was a mental defect to that man.

Now a real problem arose; Jesus actually was (is) the Messiah, he was (is)  Jehovah, he was (is)  the Son of God, the Savior of the world. The Jews would react violently to his claiming this, yet he had to let the people know it… Without getting killed… too soon… It was not possible for him to call out: “I am Jehovah. I have come to you as the Messiah, the Son of God". Most likely they would have stoned him right then and there. So he had to prepare the people, make them ready to accept these truths.

When Jesus was baptized at the age of 30 people saw the heavens opened, and the voice of the Father came out of the heavens, affirming his pleasure in his son. Even though he himself did not perform any miracles at the baptism, the people there definitely got to see something miraculous; They also saw the Holy Ghost in a bodily shape descending like a dove. From that moment Jesus could not stay hidden any longer. His day in the public eye was come.

Extraordinary teachings delivered in extraordinarily awakening ways created massive followings of Jesus. And, of course, all those of less talent, spirit, and insight, but with ambitions, had their jealousy awoken by this master-teacher. For a competitor and a master-teacher was all he was in their eyes until he started to clean leapers, give sight to the blind, movability to the lame, hearing and speech to the deaf-mute, etc. And when he started to call people out of their graves, then he was not a master teacher any more, then he was simply the Master.

Jesus' obedience, teachings, following, and miracles gave him protection for a time to proclaim who he was. This is why the miracles of Jesus were necessary. The miracles kept him alive long enough to build a following and a leadership strong enough to keep the Church going after he was gone. If this was not done, we would not have the Holy Scriptures, and the legacy of Jesus would have died in a few short years. So, not only did he mercifully heal the sick in his time, but he also made sure that we would not perish in unbelief in these times. Blessed be the name of Jesus.
