It is nothing like God to satisfy the
curiosity of man. If miracles were used to persuade man to choose the true
God, miracles would have to become commonplace, so that everyone could witness
it for themselves. And then we have the transitoriness
of our minds; we would have to see new miracles in order to believe. And the
more commonplace miracles are the less man considers them to be miracles. There
are too many trees around for man to see that they are a miracle. The
eco-system is everywhere so there is nothing divine behind its delicate balance.
There are too many babies born for man to recognize that there must be a God
behind it all. So, you see, this amount of miracles was saved for Jesus to use,
so that man would not be dull of seeing and hearing.
The sensitive truth-seeker will always find
truth in his/her own chamber, by humbly asking God to reveal truth to him/her
through small means, not through sensational miracles. The
not-so-sensitive, run-of-the-mill sinner was usually called to repentance by a prophet
with a lot of gusto, telling them straight up that they were under
condemnation. Some would listen, most would not. Miracles were sometimes used
to scare stiff-necked people to comply with life-saving commandments. The
miracle could save the life of their body, but miracles certainly don't convert
anyone. But a miracle will give power to
the faith of the already converted!
Jesus went about every day doing things that other people simply could not do! When he
made water into wine it must have been obvious to him that in itself it was not
important. It was only a party-drink! But some got to see that he could do
something that no-one else could. When a blind man has his sight restored,
surely it is wonderful for that man and for his family. They would never forget
that it was Jesus who did it. They would never be able to stop asking how it
came to be, and neither would anyone who saw it happen, and so the rumor would
spread. One question would enter into everyone’s mind; by what power does he do it?
In order for the wind to obey his voice, there
must be life in the particles of the wind. It only makes sense
that only living things can hear and obey! So, when Jesus commands water to
become wine, it is quite obvious that there must be life in water. Absolutely
dead matter could never, ever listen and obey! So, when Jesus blesses the
fishes and the bread, there must have been life in those substances that were
willing to obey the Master. When commanded to cast the nets on the other side
of the ships, the nets were filled with fish, unto the breaking-point. Yet
again there must have been life, intelligent enough to obey. Is there anything
that will not obey the master? Any matter? In
any place? If not, there must be intelligent life everywhere.
This would explain how God could simply command the elements in the creation,
and it would also explain why God saw that it was very good; the entire
creation obeyed him!
In that
perspective, knowing that Jesus was the God of the creation of the world, the
miracles of Jesus are not so miraculous to
him. He just commanded really small bits of his own creation to perform
according to his desire, whilst in the creation he commanded all matter
everywhere to obey according to the laws and rules that he put in place for as
long as the universe would stand. That was more of a miracle!
Jesus said that man could perform miracles.
11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the
Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake.
12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that
believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than
these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name,
that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I
will do it. (John 14:11-14)
Here Jesus says that if nothing else; believe me
for the miracles I perform. And he who has a real belief in me shall do the
same miracles and greater still! All you have to do is to ask the Father in my
name, and I will do it. You see. The matter will obey Jesus, not the disciples!
So,
when the prophets performed miracles, why did the elements obey them? Well, in a sense they didn’t. They still obeyed
Jesus, who had given the elements commandment concerning the prophets and
apostles. All the element are taught that when
authorized ministers of Christ act in their capacity as such, and need the
element to work together for the good of the Kingdom, then the elements will
obey these servants indirectly, for they are only in the service of their God.
