Blessed are the
peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. (Matthew 5:9)
What is a peacemaker? Is it to
turn the other cheek, and to suffer all kind of persecution for his names sake?
Certainly! But it is not all it is. Being a peacemaker is an activity, a
creative enterprise. It's found in the word peace-maker. In the English
language the word "peace" means both "un-war" and the
absence of worry, disharmony, unrest etc. In the Strong's Bible Dictionary,
commenting on the Greek word for "peace" being used in this
particular case, the word "Eirene" in the Christian meaning stand for
"the tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through
Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with its earthly lot, of
whatsoever sort". So, it appears that a peacemaker is a
missionary, preaching the good word, converting people to a state of faith and
fearlessness. And there is more than one scripture that supports this thought:
15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is
written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace,
and bring glad tidings of good things! (Romans 10:15)
And why are the
peacemakers going to be called the Children of God?
6 For unto us a child
is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder:
and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The
everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
(Isaiah 9:6)
As devoted and valiant
preachers of the gospel of peace, shall we not become the children of Christ?
What is more logical than being called the children of God, having served him
with all our heart, might, mind and strength, establishing his peace?
27 Peace I leave with
you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let
it be afraid. (John 14:27)
